We have less just over a week to go for the Bookham 10k.  Fingers crossed we don't get any snow between now and then.

You can download the current race entry list here.  The race day instructions are here.

There are entries on the day for £20.

There is also a 2.5k Fun Run starting at 10.10am, cost £5.  You can register on the day for this event from 8am.  Children under 8 must be accompanied by an adult.

No Mountains in the Molehills

I was scrabbling around in the dark at a time when the only bird ‘song’ came from the hooting owls.  The mission was to find an orange chalk mark on the floor indicating the turnaround point at the top of Ranmore Common.  It didn’t help that the forgotten head torch was lying on the dining room table leaving the lighting job to a backup Petzl e-lite, an always resident in case of emergencies in my back pack.  The light was fabulous from this little illuminate although I still had to adopt an inspector gadget stance to get the light near the floor where it was required.

Badger Comes Out to Play

While a formidable world champion was on her way to a fourth world title in what was probably the most exciting ladies triathlon race in Hawaii for some time, the Surrey Badger race director and his (long suffering) wife were having a sleepless night mentally preparing for their own big day.

Writing this race report in my head in the few days leading up to the Badger, it struck me that sometimes we focus on the negatives in the race report.  There is no doubt that race organisation has its share of stressful moments and gawd knows this one had a few too.  But instead of dwelling on this, I thought I'd share with you the highlights of what was an amazing day.

POLESDEN LACEY 10k, Great Bookham, Surrey

24 June 2012, 9.30am, 1 lap

Polesden Lacey is a beautiful 1,400 acre estate with stunning views across the Surrey Hills.  It was owned from 1906 by the famous Edwardian hostess, Mrs Greville, who entertained royalty, politicians and the cream of society.  The house, with its notably opulent interiors and priceless collection is waiting to be explored.  The house is now also the administrative centre for the National Trust.

Badger Set to Go

Tees are tried on, beer is bought, the gels are got and we're chock full of chocolate which must only mean one thing... we're all set for the Badger*.

Tell your friends there are entries on the day for £20 but unfortunately they are not guaranteed a t-shirt until all of the runners have finished.  (We're sure you'll understand it's only fair that those who entered in advance have the pick of the t-shirt sizes first).  There is also a 2.5k Fun Run off at 10.15am, entries on the day £3.

If you have pre-entered, your name should be on the list here.

You can download the race day instructions here.  If you are intending to come along, please read them carefully as they include a very important safety notice.

Hope to see you soon

Bacchus Through Rain and Shine

Someone somewhere must have netted a very big butterfly at the start of last week as carefully laid plans for the Bacchus marathon and half-marathon started to unravel rather rapidly.

Squalls at the Spitfire

Just as you know to pack your wellies for Wimbledon or any of the summer concerts, the Spitfire 20 and Tempest 10 are building a reputation as a garden waterer.  The day started nice enough, overcast but dry as the day dawned.  The forecast rain sneaked in almost unexpectedly before unleashing the proverbial stair rods.

New Event at Polesden Lacey

We have joined together with Polesden Lacey, the administrative seat of the National Trust, to announce a new 10k event on Sunday 24th June 2012.

The Polesden Lacey 10k (see what we did there) gives you the opportunity to run around the grounds and local area of the famous Edwardian country estate steeped in the history of a millionairess hostess who enticed royalty, politicians and the best of Edwardian society for entertaining weekends in the country.  The house has notably stunning interiors and collections, delightful gardens and superb views across the rolling Surrey hills.

The event is being held to raise money for the National Trust.  The National trust works to preserve and protect the buildings, countryside and coastline of England, Wales and Northern Ireland, in a range of ways, through practical conservation, learning and discovery, and encouraging everyone to visit and enjoy their national heritage.

Alan Burrows, Managing Director of Events to Live said ‘We are so excited about the prospect of this event.  The grounds of Polesden Lacey are a runners paradise and this incorporates part of a training route we have enjoyed for many years.  Having access to the grounds during the run is an added bonus allowing runners to explore areas they are normally not permitted’.

Entries for the event are expected to open in September and will be limited to 400 entrants.

Hillside Family Fun

Although not one of ours, we are very happy to support this Family Fun Run.  In its second year, the run on Sunday 31st July at 11am is a 2.2 mile slightly challenging route along the Denbies Hillside Nature Trail.  The run is open to all the family (children must be accompanied by an adult).  Entry is on the day only (£10 per family or £5 per individual).  Meet at the Denbies Hillside Car Park, Ranmore Common Road, Ranmore Common, RH5 6SR.  The car park is run by the National Trust but will be free to runners on the day.

This is a great run raising money for the National Trust.  For more information please contact the race organiser Rob on 01306 887 485.

A Fabulous Family Fun Day Out

When the alarm goes off at 4am there is always a collective groan in the Events to Live household.  But for the first time ever, we awoke to daylight.  No grappling about in the dark.  No head torches.  No watch the mist rising off the surrounding fields as the dawn warms up the grass.  (Gawd you have to love the summer months).  What we did have was masses of wildlife teeming around us as we headed off onto the route to finish setting out the course.

52 Marathon Man - Guest Blog

I’ve very kindly been asked to write a guest blog for the guys here at Events to Live.  I’m now sixteen marathons into a 52 marathon challenge in 2011. That’s right, I’m running 52 marathons in a year. And to add to the fun, each and every one of them will be under four hours, due to the Eddie Izzard effect. And why am I doing this? Well like many runners, it’s for charity. And my ego, of course! I’m raising money for Rethink and Passing it on, but perhaps just as important, I’m trying to raise the profile of them both, too. I don’t want to take up the blog with why, but if you’re interested, all of the information of why they are so important is on my website.

Spitfire Takes off in Style

Preparations for this event started back in late April and we're delighted to report that changes to the event were greated with enthusiasm this year (thank you to all of those runners for the constructive feedback last year).  We must take the opportunity at this point to thank the organisers of the Spring Onion cycle event who very kindly re-routed their sportif once we realised there would be a clash of routes.
